The Ngarrindjeri believe the Murray River was created when the culture hero, Nurunderi chased a huge cod called Pondi from the junction, the Murray and Darling Rivers to lake Alexandrina near the Coorong. Here Nurnderi finally caught “Pondi”. Cutting the fish into small pieces, he named each chunk in turn as he threw them back into the lake, creating the other species of freshwater fish.
